Not to take away from the importance of looking both ways before crossing a street or road but I think the error wasn't due to not looking both ways long enough but the assessment of the speed of the oncoming vehicle.

If he'd been traveling at normal speed (which is what I'm assuming she thought guessing by their leisurely crossing attitude) they'd have plenty of time to avoid the car.
