Kind of reckless though. He can at least try to go downstairs and knock, then report to the landlord or the authorities.

What if the corpse wasn't from the floor RIGHT below him and some couple was having snu snu in the room he's peeking on
What makes you think he didn't knock on the guy's door first? The smell would have been horrific. So it would have been obvious which direction it was coming from.
