It was pneumo/hemothorax as the cause of death. The lungs don’t inflate/deflate by themselves, they are “sucked open” by the intercostal muscles expanding and diaphragm moving down. When you have a hole In the chest to the outside, as the patient tries to inhale, air gets sucked in the hole into the thoracic cavity between the chest wall and the lungs and doesn't inflate the lungs fully. With the next breath, more air gets sucked in, deflating the lungs more until eventual collapse. Without removing the air in the cavity, the patient’s breathing effort will become stronger and stronger with the respiratory rate increasing until they suffocate to death. If there is internal bleeding, blood fills the cavity causing the same issue. Emergency treatment for this to plug the holes (tampons work well), then insert a large gauge needle, and suck the air/blood out until surgical treatment could be performed. This was a bad death. He slowly suffocated to death, still able to try to breathe, but less and less air coming in. |

Great post. Never get tired of last breath videos. I usually can’t stand eyes. They make my stomach quiver. But I was able to stomach this one.
