As many as 15 construction workers being transported to their worksite yesterday died after the bus in which they were travelling crashed into a truck parked on the hard shoulder on Al Ain highway at the junction of Emirates Road in Dubai.

The bus was transporting the men early morning yesterday from their labour camp in Umm al Quwain to the worksite in Jebel Ali. While 13 people died on the spot, two more succumbed to their injuries later in the evening.

According to the Indian Consulate, nine Indians are among the 15 that died in the fatal accident while the Bangladesh Consulate has confirmed the death of four Bangladeshis in the accident.

“Most of the Indians who died are from Punjab,” said one of the sources.

The truck driver told cops that he had parked his truck on the hard shoulder after the brakes of his vehicle had developed problems. According to Dubai Police sources, both the bus and the truck drivers have been taken into custody for questioning.

Based on his conversation with the survivors, Akm Mizanur Rahman, First Secretary at the Bangladeshi Consulate in Dubai, said: “They only remember the crash. The impact was so severe that all of them were unconscious. They next thing they remember is that they were in the hospital,” he said.

Both the Indian and Bangladeshi consulates have pledged to assist the victims of the crash, and will also help in facilitating the remains of those killed in the crash.

According to the Bangladeshi Consulate, the condition of one of the four injured continues to be critical. “He is undergoing treatment at the ICU. Doctors have however told us that he is out of danger,” said Rahman. “Five of the injured have been discharged from Al Baraha Hospital,” he added.

According to Rahman, the bodies of the dead would be repatriated in two to three days after the completion of the post-mortem and other procedures.

“We have been told that the compensation will be based on the police report. The repatriation cost will be borne by the company. We have promised to make all necessary arrangements. The family of the dead Bangladeshi workers will be given monetary assistance (about 35,000 Takas) in Bangladesh for the burial,” he noted.

The dead Bangladeshis have been identified as Masum Dhali, 24; Mohammed Budrul Hassan, 35; Alam Gir, 32 and Nazrul Islam aged 28.
