Sounds like a .22cal pistol...

I think he intended to blow his brains all over that sign behind him, but a .22 isn't gonna do that. It mostly likely mushroomed inside his head and fragmented if it was a hollow-point or solid, soft lead bullet. The torrent of blood after his final exhale was the cause of his demise. The high velocity, impact, and deceleration of the bullet in his brain most likely stunned him so that he didn't feel much, but death was not instant.
