Looks like the floodwater wrapped him around the small tree and pinned him there. That is a hazard of being carried in floodwater, especially when it is out of the streambanks. The moving water will pin a body against trees, fences, etc. and drown them on the spot. Better odds of survival are to ferry/sprint to an eddy than to bounce along the banks. But in that skinny channel, he probably had no choice.

I worked a flood, restoring power after the fact....we found pieces of missing people, organs.... fucking eerie feeling. & yet here I sit, stopping by here on a day to day basis to look at the downfall of society
