A 19-year-old man, Saul K., and a friend were walking along a narrow pathway when they passed by a pit which contained sewer sludge. Saul lost his footing and fell in.

His friend immediately alerted nearby residents and the authorities. However, during the rescue operation to find Saul's body, the rescue diver instead recovered the body of a girl who had disappeared the previous day. The diver went back in, and found and excavated the body of an older man, before eventually finding Saul's body.

The Mayor of Harare expressed shock and described the incident as a direct case of negligence by the responsible council department.
