It's not a seizure. It kind of looks like one, and it's commonly misinterpreted as one, but this is something different. Seizures are a diagnosis of a chronic medical condition that can occur at a later time as the result of a head injury, but when people take a nice thump on the melon, it's not a seizure, its just twitching and reseting of the vagus nerve (among others) Shoot, I've seen people fall off the toilet twitching and spazzing all over the bathroom floor like they took a haymaker to the head, but alas.. A nice big poop just caused a glorious stimulation of the vagus. Sorry if my rambling is boring, I just find this amazing that someone got this on video from the onset of the injury, with a clear shot of the force she was hit with. People don't seize with they get hit in the head, they have involuntary muscle contractions Someone mentioned "posturing" *highfives that person* That's what this is, is posturing, and there's two different kinds. Decerebrate and decorticate. Decorticate posturing is a shitty thing to see a patient display, it means damage to the midbrain, the thalamus, and the cerebral hemispheres. We call it the mummy pose.. Hands and arms are folded over the midsection, hands turned inward, Patients can recover -eh, I mean survive from the sorts of injuries that would present decorticate posturing, but they'll just stare and drool. Decerebrate is what this poor girl is displaying. She has her arms straight and her wrists bent upward-- that's the tell tale sign is the position of her hands. Her knees are flexed, her legs are stiff. And she's got that damn sandal can't let go of that damn chancla! Decerebrate posturing means there is a brain stem injury. By hammering her cerembrum straight down, he smooshed (yes, smooshed) her brainstem like a glob of playdough. Her boyfriend just stopped her ability to breathe, regulate her blood pressure, and continue on living. This girl's brain has just herniated down through the brainstem and killed her. She'll stop moving once her brain runs out the oxygen in her system, what a shame. I've seen patients go back and forth from decorticate then to decerebrate, but only when they're suffering from a type of encephalitic disease. I wish I could have opened up that girl's head and looked. |
