Incredible rescue in Sirjan
Two condemned to death rescued; bloody aftermath

A scuffle that broke out during the attempted public hanging of two robbers in southwest Iran led to two being shot dead, dozens injured, and the escape, albeit short-lived, of the convicts. Please be aware that there are graphic images included in this post.

One of our Observers in Iran, Omid Habibinia, passed this story on to us.

When the Sirjan town authorities tried to hang two men convicted of robbery on the morning of Dec. 22, protestors threw stones at the police and members of the court carrying out the execution. According to the semi-official Fars news agency, the protestors also shot at officers with handguns.

Amidst the chaos, the protestors managed to cut down the convicts, who were still alive a minute after the attempted hanging (seen at 00'30 - 00'50 in the following video).

The police responded by opening fire on the protestors (seen after 01'05). Two of the convicts' family members were killed in the fray with over 20 people also reportedly injured.

The convicts were soon tracked down by the police after fleeing Sirjan by car with the help of family members. They were then brought back to the execution platform and a second hanging began in the afternoon.

This time however, the protestors set the platform alight, once again preventing the execution of the convicts.

The men did not manage to escape a second time however, and were detained by police until the next morning, when they were finally hanged. Behind closed doors.

it would take a lot of nerve to go up against the authorities like that in any of those arab countries (as well as korea and china). as many as there were protesting and risking their lives to save these two men i have to wonder if they were wrongfully convicted? if more people would resist the government more often then they could and would overtake the government and put an end to such brutal backwards executions for crimes that should not warrant a death sentence. i'm not saying that burglary is ok because it is not. but certainly it is not a crime that should cost the offender/s his life.

December 23: The two men, who were rescued by the people from the gallows yesterday morning, were hanged last night December 22 according to the official Iranian news agencies.

Quoting Farajollah Karegar, general prosecutor of Sirjan, the state run news agency ISNA reported that the two men who were convicted of armed robbery were hanged late yesterday evening and 14 others have been arrested in connection with their escape.

Farajollah Karegar admitted that due to clashes with people the authorities’ second attempt to hang the men in public failed and they were transferred to the prison. He also said that two people were killed under the clashes and several cars belonging to the security forces were damaged. The report didn’t mention the location where the two men were hanged. But according to unverified reports they were hanged inside the prison.

"Esmaeil Fathizadeh" and "Mohammad Esfandiarpour" were sentenced to death charged with armed robbery and were scheduled to be hanged in public in Sirjan yesterday morning. But few moments after being hanged they were rescued by the people who threw stones at the security forces and shouted slogans against the Iranian regime.

Few hours later both men were arrested by the security forces and their hanging was rescheduled to early evening. But due to heavy clashes between the people and the security forces they were transferred to the prison where it is believed they were hanged.

According to our sources at least 3 people were killed and more than 30 wounded, some of them seriously.

Many people have been arrested in connection to this public uprising and Iran Human Rights is concerned about the well being.

I am a great believer in capital punishment but in the middle East I believe justice is a joke and you could be killed for trivial offences as we have seen on this forum numerous times, the middle East fucking sucks.
