All very well rushing after he is dead and been in water for an hour.

Unless you are a strong swimmer jumping in to save him will mean your death as well as he drags YOU under to save himself.

That's the exact reason I would NOT recommend swimming out to try to save someone from drowning if you don't have lifeguard water rescue training. You need to know how to approach the victim without putting your own life in jeopardy.

Without training you can use something to reach the victim like a float on a rope, thrown from shore or a strong swimmer can even swim out and toss a float to them without getting close enough so they can grab you!
