she probably did die on the way to hospital, but she was more than likely brain dead before she hit the ground

I believe you're referring to an oft-repeated claim regarding mass shootings, as opposed to common shootings and gun violence/murder in the United States (which happens every day, in highly disturbing frequencies).

Even when focusing on just mass shootings, there's some serious debate surrounding the whole notion that "gun free zones" are havens for gun violence, as explained in articles like this one:
