CARACAS – A policeman and a policewoman were killed and four other officers injured during a violent protest in San Cristobal, the capital of Tachira state in the Venezuelan Andes during a protest against a nationwide increase in bus fares.

The officers died during disturbances at the La Concordia bus terminal in the city of San Cristobal, police said on Twitter.

The police officers were run over by a bus that had been commandeered by hooded protesters known as “encapuchados” (hooded ones), according to a tweet from Tachira state police. “Police were cordoning off the area to prevent encapuchados from attacking private vehicles,” one Tachira police tweet read.

Local media however disputed that version, saying the bus driver was trying to break through students’ picket lines.

Some 31 students were arrested, Tachira lieutenant governor Ramon Cabeza said.

A local supermarket was looted and local university UNET suspended classes.

The students were protesting an increase in the price of bus tickets announced for April 1st of 75% from 20 Bolivars to 35 Bolivars, an increase triggered by the recent increase in gasoline prices. Perhaps more importantly, the half price ticket for students and seniors was eliminated.

The trouble began when hooded protesters took control of several buses at La Concordia, the state’s largest terminal, La Nacion newspaper said.

Minimum bus fares across Venezuela are set to increase Friday from 20 bolivares (8 cents) to 35 bolivares (14 cents). Two additional hikes, planned for August and November, will bring the minimum fare to 50 bolivares (20 cents).

Also starting Friday, elderly and disabled Venezuelans, who have been riding for free, will be charged half-fare.

Those officers where doing their job, trying to maintain the peace. It sucks that they died over a protest to raise the bus fares in that country a whole whopping 14 cents
