Well, I'm not an American and I get it. I wasn't born here in Puerto Rico, I'm originally from next door in the Dominican Republic. I know first-hand what happens when a war breaks out and the government doesn't have all the manpower it needs. In a nutshell, there were two coups in a row and all heck broke loose. While the official army was all occupied with fighting between the powers that be, Haitians from next door decided to take advantage of the chaos. There's a lot of historical bitterness between the two countries. We had gangs of armed Haitians roaming the country killing, looting, and murdering. Dozens of people killed in my village alone. Nobody in the village could do a thing because nobody had guns. We were 100% fucked till Reagan the American troops rolled in to stop the mess. The Haitians melted away as soon as guys with bigger guns showed up. And as I said, Ukraine is an even more recent example.

An armed populace is an insurance policy. Like any insurance policy, you don't need it - until you do. It's naïve in the extreme to think your little island will never face a life or death struggle for existence. When it does, you're going to need a populace of strong people who already know how to handle a weapon.

Also, the guns used in crime almost never are legal guns. I can guarantee you this weapon in this video is illegal and nobody concerned had the least bit of training in its proper use.

Look, to me it's totally fine if some people don't understand others/other cultures/laws etc.. I'm sure some (non) Americans don't understand european laws/culture/people and that's also fine.

You need to understand that most european countries have no or very strict gun laws and close to zero gun deaths so all that gun talk and usage really is a far from home thing for so many of us here. In my country maybe 5 or even less people die by gun every year it's a very rare occurence. So seeing kids with guns, neighbors, regular citizens, is just surreal to me.

A friend of mine now has a criminal record because he had a little gun collection, just for fun and he wasn't planning to use them but police raided his home and his little gun collection was melted and destroyed. He asked me to hold this 9mm just for fun, that mofo was heavy and it scared the shit out of me lol. Luckily the police didn't look for any fingerprints because mine were on it i'm sure.

Fun fact: he now can't visit the US for 5 years thanks to his record of illegal gun possession
