The Pizza Man & The Collar Bomb: The Unusual Death Of Brian Wells
On August 28, 2003, an incident unfolded in Erie, Pennsylvania, involving Brian Douglas Wells, a pizza delivery man who became entangled in a complex plot involving a bank robbery and a bomb. This incident, often referred to as the "pizza bomber case," is one of the most perplexing and talked-about crimes in recent U.S. history. Brian Wells, a 46-year-old pizza delivery driver for Mama Mia's Pizzeria, was dispatched to deliver pizzas to a remote location on the outskirts of Erie. It was later revealed that this delivery was a setup for a bank robbery. After delivering the pizzas, Wells was accosted by several individuals who attached a collar bomb around his neck. He was then forced to rob a PNC Bank, armed with a homemade shotgun fashioned to look like a cane. Wells entered the bank and handed a note to the teller, demanding $250,000 and stating that he was forced to rob the bank as the bomb around his neck would explode if he failed. After leaving the bank with a lesser amount of money, Wells was apprehended by the police in a nearby parking lot. While in police custody, Wells claimed that he had been forced to commit the robbery and that the bomb was going to detonate soon. Tragically, the bomb exploded before the bomb squad could arrive, killing Wells in a horrific scene that was broadcast on live television. The bomb was later determined to be a complex device that would have been extremely difficult to remove without detonation. The investigation into this case led to a twisted tale of a complex plot masterminded by Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong and her accomplices. Diehl-Armstrong, who had a history of mental illness and criminal activity, was purportedly the mastermind behind the plot, which was intended to raise funds to pay for the murder of her father. In 2010, Diehl-Armstrong was convicted of multiple charges related to the case, including armed bank robbery and using a destructive device in a crime of violence. She was sentenced to life in prison. |
