To me it looks like the dogs aren't being vicious at all. It's like they're concerned for the man, and they're trying to alert him or something. They're letting out these high-pitched yelps and it looks like they're nudging him/trying to drag him. At no point do they actually tear flesh from him...am I wrong? :S

The reason the pits are not fully attacking the man is because he is dieing. Even if that man was capable of getting up and tried to defend himself or run away, those dogs would FUCK him up even more.
