Here is the Phoenix PD PIO video of it. It is a little longer and the very end slows it down to almost frame by frame. From time of seeing the gun to firing was under a second. I agree, he should have just dropped the gun and let it fall to the ground. Watching the shooting officers camera in super slow motion shows what prompted him to shoot. The deceased had the gun directly behind his back. The other officer yells, the deceased moves the gun from behind his back, forward. Watch the super slow motion at the end and you see why the officer fired in defense of his partner. It isnt murder or any criminal offense. No way you could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officer murdered him for no reason.

A civil suit will be quickly settled because the legal standard is preponderance of evidence (51% wins the civil suit, very crude explanation.)

The officer has to live with this the rest of his life. It was a tragedy in the game of kill or be killed.

Officers don't stand in front of the door. Many officers have been shot and killed through the door or directly in front of the door when it is recessed like a house with the door set back into a walkway of sorts.
