Re: Peter Smedley Assisted Suicide
I give him and his whole family big props for ending the suffering on his own terms. I, myself am totally disabled and in pain 24/7. When it gets too bad, I will do the same, if I have the guts. I read this thread and a lot said this way very sad.....but when you are in excruciating pain, taking 400 pills a month that don't work, this is a great solution. Make sure the family and friends are taking care of and just unplug. Thanks for the thread

Re: Peter Smedley Assisted Suicide
I guess life in a wheel chair was too much for him. Shame. He still had his mind and intelligence yet chose to end it. Part of me thinks this is a selfish act, he could have gone on to live a few more years. Wish my nan could have gone down this method. She was hospitalised for 3 years, lost her marbles, didnt recognize any of her family, constantly shitting and pissing herself. Horrible way to go.

Re: Peter Smedley Assisted Suicide
For anyone to say this is selfish is pretty judgmental. It's not as if he was just confined to a wheelchair and he wanted out. He had MND. A wheelchair is just the beginning. The horror can come on rapidly. I took care of my sister who was diagnosed with CJD (similar neurological hell to MND). She was given eight months to live and lasted five. The type she had was familial (fCJD); which turns out is hereditary, but only the first case in my family that was reported. I have a 50/50 chance of developing CJD; almost certain if I carry the gene. Peter Smedley did not just take the easy way out. He saved his family the torture of having to watch his debilitation and, eventual, death. If I develop CJD, and my wife is okay with it, this sounds like a damn good idea. I have to try very hard to remember my sister as "normal" because of the everlasting effect watching her die from her disease took on me. Just food for thought to all you judges!
