The whole story is suspicious. He not only survived 6 years in prison but was among those who planned and successfully carried out an escape. This just might suggest that his fellow prisoners had a good regard for him, and didn't believe the charges he was locked up on.

Also, the notion that the drug dealers killed him "because they found out about his past" is highly suspicious. Stealing from drug dealers is easily enough to get you killed. Indeed, justifying the killing as being of a "pedophile" might well be a good move by the dealers as it is likely to gain them some sympathy.
