Re: Pedestrian Crossing the Road Hit by Speeding Car
it was back in 1976, but i remember when i was hit by a car vividly. at 16 i had a paper route, about 120 or so customers. sunday paper loads are always very big, so i would wear one bag of papers over my shoulders, papers loaded back and front of me. another bag was loaded over the bike, papers loaded on each side. i borrowed a friend's bike with a banana seat for that. Pebblebeach drive was a road that had a slight curve in it, i came out just before the apex of that curve where i could not see very well in one direction, so i would stop and listen carefully for vehicles. hearing nothing i peddled out, no sooner did i get into the street when i heard the car and then screeching brakes and WHUMP! knocked the wind right out of me and i was flying and then on the ground and everything was black. then i heard a man saying "Oh Shit Oh Shit Oh Shit!!!" and i remember thinking, "fuck, i must be bleeding all over the place". i was trying to move and get up but i couldn't because the newspaper bag and the bike were pinning me down. . . i do remember that the split seconds between seeing the car, and feeling it hit me, lasted absolutely forever, but i felt frozen in time and could absolutely do nothing at all except watch it happen. |
