Re: Parachutist Dies After He Hits the Ground During Landing
What he did is called "a low hook". He was trying to come in and do what is called "swooping", where you turn sharp, low to the ground, gain lots of speed, and do a fly-by low to the ground. Common for people who have skydiving experience to do this for their landing, as it looks cool. However, it's also how a lot of experienced skydivers get hurt or killed, as misjudging your altitude by even a foot can be disastrous. Having swooped before, the goal is always to be as low and fast as possible. It's easy to see how someone thinking that this time they'll get "just a little lower" can wait too long and hit the ground too hard. Every experienced skydiver knows someone who has made the mistake of getting too low during a swooping attempt, and has low hooked instead.
