He probably died from the impact because of bracing for it, and using his arms and legs to save himself. He kept his hands on the toggles and tried to use his legs like a normal landing.

But the parachute was also pulling him forward so maybe there was nothing he could do. But still, if you can minimize your heads impact even a little it could save your life.

From the looks of it, he ran out of room to land safely (I know... it's like "no shit, Sherlock!"). Ideally he would've wanted to land with his legs being more parallel to the ground, almost like sitting, to use your feet to gradually slow down, or land on his feet and come to a running stop. I think he was going for the sitting landing and simply ran out of space, which probably destroyed his spine.
