Pakistani Woman Hanged Her Teenage Daughter After She Became Pregnant
Peshawar, Pakistan A mother allegedly hanged her teenage daughter, with her telling police that her daughter's conduct was improper. She had discovered that her daughter was involved in an illicit relationship and had become pregnant. The woman, wanting to avoid social disgrace, hanged her daughter from a tree using a rope from a traditional string bed. Apparently, the daughter consented to being hanged. |

Well, you have to consider that until the 19th century in (former British) India, the ritual of "sati" was practiced. The ritual of sati (also called suttee) involved a widow immolating herself on her deceased husband's funeral pyre, or in some cases soon afterward by other means. She would throw herself onto the burning pyre and burn to death, an act framed in certain Brahmin and related traditions as the ultimate expression of womanly devotion. However, in most cases, the women were forced rather than it being voluntarily. When the Brits took over, they outlawed that despicable practice under threat of death. So, the whole point is, it's not such a far leap that daughters would be killed ('honor killing') for staining the family's reputation. |
