Re: Pakistan: Motorcyclists Throat Slit By Flying Kite String
"Manja is a synthetic kite string that is coated with powdered glass or other abrasive substance. It is used in kite competitions to cut an opponent's kite string. Manja has been used for over 2,000 years, and is traditionally made from fine cotton thread coated with rice glue, tree gums, and finely powdered glass. Some people have their own secret recipes for manja. Manja is dangerous and has led to multiple bans on its manufacture and sale. However, enforcement of these laws is lacking. Manja can cause painful, life-threatening injuries and kill both animals and humans, including children. For example, in 2023, a manja cord dangling from an electric pole cut the throat of a 4-year-old girl while she was riding a motorcycle. Manja can also cause expensive blackouts and electrocution when it cuts through power lines. A single power-line disruption can affect up to 10,000 people." |
