Now I've got it. My newest calculations, taking into account some of these recent developments, have revealed that this was likely a simple case of the two children playing up a tree, when a nearby Chupacabra fired a cannon full of rattlesnakes at them. Generally, a good wallop from a serpent cannon will only daze a child or small adult. However, in this instance, owing perhaps to the Chupacabra's lapse in sobriety, the gunpowder to rattlesnake ratio was way off--the consequences of which can be plainly seen. Chances are high that that blasted Chupacabra is just passed out somewhere beneath all those wood chips, like some infernal hamster.
