Re: Out of Control Truck Hits and Kills Biker at Tollbooth

He knew his brakes were out.. He had to make a conscious choice...

plan a. does he continue at the toll booth on the far right lane and ram everyone waiting on the toll line killing many more people

plan b. He takes the extreme right shoulder, hopefully his momentum will be slowed by the foliage and the single biker and a few cars..

A few people versus a whole bunch of people.. Could have been way worse
It’s almost like the trolley problem paradox.

Re: Out of Control Truck Hits and Kills Biker at Tollbooth

When I am stopping, my attention is in my rear-view mirror EVERY TIME, once I know my forward motion is under control. If the biker had been looking in his rear-view mirror, he could have cut in to the large space between the trucks, and the crashing truck would have missed him. You have to have a sense of self-preservation when riding.
This is how I am on the highway or interstate everytime there’s a sudden stop. My eyes are glued to the mirror just to make sure the asshole behind me doesn’t give me a reach around.

Reminds me of a Grizzly Bear running down it's prey.

Re: Out of Control Truck Hits and Kills Biker at Tollbooth

I wonder if the driver laid on the horn, it could have alerted the biker way before the truck hit him.
Poor guy on the bike, I also feel for the trucker.

Always hear about how truckers are forced by the companies they drive for, to live and drive as time is money. And the companies also skimp on rules and regulations if it saves them money in the short term. So maybe they’ll force the trucker to wait before getting the the truck to getting the truck serviced.

Agreed. I developed it to just be part of what I do when I am driving. Looking in my rear view, even going thru green lights I look both ways just in case, and am on defense of where I could move to just in case I need to move my vehicle from/in the lane I am on.
These crash vids have been extremely helpful.

Put some hate music behind that first video and you'll have one hell of a clip!

Re: Out of Control Truck Hits and Kills Biker at Tollbooth

Let's stop getting carried away calling people "bikers".

Obviously a hard and a quick decision. But it looks like he didn't even try and miss the "scooter". Maybe he was on the brakes so hard and having 1 wheel off road he didn't get any response turning the wheel.

That's definitely one of those moments where you have to choose your life or someone else's.

We can say he missed the other trucks to save lives. But that's bullshit. If he went into the rear end of that truck in his lane he'd be dead, possibly some other people, but he'd be dead for sure. So he missed that truck to save himself, not other people.

Re: Out of Control Truck Hits and Kills Biker at Tollbooth

Hope he didn't get into that truck and drive it, knowing his brakes were bad....
No even brand new brakes go out sometimes. There's so many parts that can malfunction with air brakes. Honestly the biker should had waited in line like everyone else and he wouldn't had died. Bikers ignore plenty of traffic rules and laws because they can fit anywhere.
