Re: Opposite Of Death

No dying but still great
Curious if they were massaging the guys limbs. Is that something that is done after being electrocuted?

Re: Opposite Of Death

It looked like he slipped in something and kicked his flip-flop off. When his bare foot touched the ground, he discovered that the grille was hot, probably with only the normal 230V 50 Hz AC you get in Pakistan. The resistance of the human body varies greatly, but 1,000 ohms is a good ballpark figure here. That puts 230 milliamps through him, a bit lower than is required to reliably stop the heart, but plenty enough to cause fibrillation and, if he stays long enough, serious burn damage throughout his body. Direct a bystander to call for help immediately, and make everyone aware of the danger. First aid in this case would be to ensure he is breathing and has a heartbeat, and administer CPR if not. If he is OK for that, treat for shock—not electric shock but the medical kind. Lay him on his back with his feet elevated, keep him warm, and comfort him if he is conscious. He has a head injury from falling, so be ready for delayed effects including vomiting, in which case roll him onto his left side to keep the airway clear. Otherwise do not move him or let him move. The current has cooked him internally, and any rubbing or massaging will only make things worse. Treat any open wounds from the skin burning off at the points of contact by rinsing with clean water and wrapping in clean bandage, if such things are to be had anywhere in a Muzzie shithole like Pakistan.

If you can't do any of that, get some friends together and pick him up by one arm and one leg, preferably opposite ones, and carry him a few yards until you realize that none of you know where you're going, and then sort of drop him and try to get him to stand up by yanking on one arm. If he happens to be on fire, fan the flames with your loincloth and beat on him with whatever is handy.

Re: Opposite Of Death

What I find just as heroic, at least to me, is the moment when the very man suffering electrocution "waved" away his friend, who had just initially touched him, to keep "him" safe! To be concerned of others, whilst in mortal plight, is sacrosanct!

Re: Opposite Of Death

This guy knew exactly what to do! Must be trained or experienced in some way awesome nevertheless
Many many more people should be aware of what to do in that situation. Maybe a small lesson taught in school at the appropriate age rather than just in situations where students work with electricity. But even then, when I did electronics in school they didn’t tell us then either. I wonder if it’s something they instruct electrical engineering students on in university.

Re: Opposite Of Death

Good thinking. In case of no towel, you can always drop your pants. Same when trying to extend a hand to a drowning victim. We usually forget about our clothes and keep looking for something around us.

Re: Opposite Of Death

Seriously now, nobody dies, but a dude would have electrocuted, just like the rest of them, if it wasn't for his friend's high IQ.

In addition though, this video answers one of my longest running electrocution questions:

Can you touch the person?
Apparently, a little.

Karachi, Pakistan
To clarify why the rescuer was able to touch the victim without ending up in a similar situation, look at how his hands were positioned when they made contact.

They were fully open, and he only touched the victim by the fingers, not the palm, or with him trying to grasp the victim to pull him away.

This meant that, even if the muscles of his hand did contract due to the current, there wasn't a risk that he'd be involuntarily grabbing the victim.

...damn quick thinking on his part with the towel though.
