Re: One of These Days: A Compilation of Dismemberments
Yeah, that is something I think about. A few concepts governed the cuts. The first is music. The compilation is ostensibly a music video. As such, the music prescribes cut points. This usually means hard cuts at intro, verse, bridge, etc. In this case, it also meant jump cuts via the time signature (4/4). This required choosing either 8 or 16 beats per take. Sixteen was just too long. It drained the intensity of the whole thing. The content didn’t cooperate either. Therefore, the arrangement became eight--with Floyd’s pacing, a tight eight. The second is the actual time it takes processors to dismember their marks. On average, they took three minutes. “One of These Days” runs about five minutes and features 10 dismemberments of 3 to 5 pieces. Chronicling all material progress in the allotted time required jump cuts, full stop. The third is the goal of aligning mise-en-scene and decoupage. At one point “cuts for cuts” jokingly surfaced as justification for the (ahem) shitty cutaways. Ultimately, it was decided that jump cuts, in conjunction with shaky cam and interference, reflected the plight of those forced to watch the sport of their own dismemberment. The fourth is the goal of making old content new. Many people have seen these clips. Heck, the day before I posted this, GODREKR was electronically dismembered for reposting the very clip used in this video’s bridge. In short, if someone is gracious enough to click play, they should get something original. For better or worse, that means music, cuts, post-processing, etc. Other things influence cut decisions but that’s probably enough on the subject. Fwiw, I generally dislike fast cuts of any type. They are a cheap and ineffective substitute for real action. They are a sign of hasty filming and lazy directing. They lead to poor screen engagement. In fact, I’m a huge fan of the long take. Hitchcock, Tarkovsky, and Kurosawa (to name a few) were absolute masters of cinema. Each of them had an aversion to cuts. I guess I’m just saying I don’t take the decisions or the subject lightly. In closing, I think you’re correct in a few spots...but I still think the final cuts generally distinguish a correct decision. Regardless, point taken. Criticism constructively consumed for future endeavors. |
