Re: One Last Drink Before Blowing His Brains Out
Let me clear this shit up for all of you. Cracker is not because of whips, slaves or even fucking moonshine. Florida Crackers originated from the cattle drives. Our grandfathers and great grandfathers would drive the herds from Highlands, Hardee, Desoto or Okeechobee counties, through the palmetto ledges on horseback, all the way over towards the Port of Tampa. This was to get them to market and make their living. Cracker came from them cracking their whips in the air to keep the herds moving and keep the bulls from mining the cows back. There was a really informative article written around 2003-2004 in the Highlands Today newspaper about my kid's great grandfather called "The Last Florida Cracker". I had it framed for him, but he's passed and I don't know where it went. You could probably Google it. I am obviously a Florida native, but to be called a cracker, or better yet "cracka" now, is as derogatory as any other slur towards another race. It is done out of malice and hate. To the person that said that it didn't seem as bad as the other slurs......some people don't think the "n" word is bad, but it is disgusting. It is all perception. No one has the right to call another by ANY derogatory term and cracker is as bad as any other. |
