A former mayor of Monte Azul was killed in a head-on crash between his car and a cattle truck on the MGC-122 highway late on Friday.

Alexandre A.F.d.O., 65, was driving alone in a Volkswagen Jetta when the vehicle collided with an oncoming empty cattle truck. The impact was severe, completely destroying the car and causing the truck to overturn and leave the roadway.

The 43-year-old truck driver was trapped in the wreckage and sustained injuries. Firefighters extricated him and he was transported to hospital.

He told hospital staff that he had been heading toward Bahia when he heard a noise, struck the car, and overturned into the opposite lane. The driver suspected Alexandre may have fallen asleep at the wheel, though no witnesses were found. The highway was reported to have been in good condition with proper signage and no rain at the time of the crash.
