There were no friends. The guy in the car just happened along when the thing was going down. The timing is the key. He gets out of the car and, when he recognizes what is happening beats a quick retreat. At the point where he turns to flee the cop still has his hands in the air like a typical victim. The car guy had no idea that the situation was about to turn on a dime.

There are few things that make me happier than the transition between the thief thinking, "I'm in control, this is mine!" to "FUCK, I'M SHOT!". It's a thing of deep, profound beauty.
