Okay to all of that. However, from the viewpoint of the robbers I would think that it would make a lot more sense to ride behind the victim rather than in front. That way you can see immediately if he tries to make an escape move. In this case the short delay before the robbers saw him peel off gave him enough separation to make it a hard shot at a moving target.
