NYC School Employee Shot in the Forehead at New York City Deli

The 19-year-old paraprofessional shot in the head outside a Brooklyn elementary school has been left brain-dead, police sources said Wednesday — adding that a suspect is in custody.

Ethan Holder, a substitute at PS 203, was walking near Avenue M and Utica Avenue in Flatlands just before 3 p.m. Tuesday when he was shot by a gunman wearing a red ski mask, authorities said.

He was struck once in the forehead and once in the thigh and rushed to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition.

The shooting has left the teen brain-dead, according to sources.

Police sources said the suspected gunman was picked up on Wednesday, and said the shooting may have involved a personal beef.

“I know him since he was a baby,” one Holder neighbor said of the victim Wednesday. “He’s a very sweet kid. No, he’s not the kind of kid who was into trouble. He don’t have gang friends or anything like that.

“He’s usually just alone on his way to work. He just goes to college and work and you know you see him taking an Uber to go to class,” said the woman, who asked that her name not be used.

“I don’t understand why anyone would shoot him,” she said. “This morning his mother called and I was just shocked. He’s a great kid and this is horrible news. I can’t believe it.”

She said Holder’s mother is from Grenada and his father, who she said works for the city Board of Education, is from Guyana.

The attack took place not long after classes let out. Dismissal time at the school is around 2:30 p.m.

Footage from a nearby deli shows the suspect walking north on Utica Avenue — when he spots the victim heading west on Avenue M, the sources said.

The suspect then walks east on Avenue M before stopping, turning around to face his target and firing at him, the sources said, citing the video.

The victim collapsed into the front door of the deli after he was shot. The gunman fled in a dark Lexus, according to cops and police sources.

The shooting happened within known gang territory, but the victim has no criminal history or gang ties, the sources said.

In addition to a red ski mask, the gunman wore a red hoodie, red sweatpants and a red do-rag, police said.

Shortly after making this post it was brought to my attention that the victim died from their injuries (not surprising given the injuries he suffered). A suspect is also in custody at this time.

FLATLANDS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A New York City schools employee has died after being shot in the head in Brooklyn on Tuesday, and police have arrested a man in connection to the incident.

Ethan Holder, 19, was pronounced dead at Brooklyn Hospital after being shot in the head around 2:50 p.m. outside a deli at 5022 Avenue M in the Flatlands section on Tuesday.

Police sources say a gunman fired four shots, striking the teenager once in the head.

They say there were no words exchanged between the two, and there was no argument before the shots were fired.

The Department of Education says the victim works as a paraprofessional for District 75, located in the same building as PS 203 Floyd Bennett School.

He was shot less than a block from the school, and according to police sources, he was the intended target of the shooting.

Javier Oates, a 19-year-old Brooklyn resident, was arrested and charged with murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm.
