Yup. I fell asleep at the wheel once and blew through a T-intersection out in a very rural industrial area in the middle of the night. One of the 4 people in the only vehicle that was traveling on the cross road I flew across called 911 because of how bad the wreck looked. They were only about 75 yards away from the intersection. If they had set out on their trip just a few seconds earlier, or I on mine just a few seconds later, I have no doubt that my single-vehicle act of stupidity would have instead resulted in at least one person being killed. I don't drive fatigued anymore. It was a hard lesson to learn, but not nearly as hard as it would have been to learn it twice with a dead person on my conscience. I got complacent, and my complacency almost cost lives just like this man's complacency cost him his. You never know when just a smidge of vigilance may keep those little meaningless seconds from being the only other difference between life and death, so try not to slack off. |
