I've worked around an MRI machine in the past. They have a great amount of magnetic pull to them. The regular staff demonstrated this to me my tying a key on a piece of string around my wrist, then asked me to approach slowly with the key dangling freely. I had barely entered the main room and the key was out in front of me drawn to the machine. That bloke shouldn't have been in there, but even for support, there are numerous signs warning people to remove ALL metal. Genitalia piercings included.  |

MRI machines are no walk in the park. They are seriously powerful stuff. They even make sure that bra's are not worn on patients because the metal components become like bullets. If you're ever bored, look up the vids of staff playing with them to demonstrate how strong those things are. |

If you turn off an MRI machine, the liquid helium will turn to gas and be lost. Typical MRI machines hold 1700L of liquid helium. So each emergency shutdown will cost $25K in just liquid helium replacement, plus shipping and machine maintenance. They didn't turn it off in order to save money. |

1. I highly doubt the tech knew any of that. 2. I’m certain that the hospital would rather pay $100k in repairs, versus paying a multi-million dollar judgement/settlement for someone’s death.
