Re: Nursing Student Is Run Over by School Bus On the Wrong Lane
Driver Cleyton Matos Campos, 47, a Coxim City Hall employee, was arrested in flagrante delicto for intentional homicide after running over and killing the nursing student Letícia C., 25. He had his driver's license expired more than a year ago, refused to take a breathalyzer test and has a criminal record for drug trafficking and illegal possession of a firearm. Witnesses said that Cleyton was driving a school bus at high speed and in the wrong lane when he lost control and hit Letícia, who was walking to university. The vehicle then collided with a tree and ran over the young woman. A passenger who was on the bus told that the driver complained about the traffic and seemed very tired shortly before the accident. According to her, Cleyton was almost asleep at the wheel and even asked for candy to try to stay awake. "He was very sleepy, almost falling asleep at the wheel. He asked me to buy him some candy. Then, I just felt the glass shatter and him yelling, 'My God, I killed her,'" she recounted. Letícia was studying Nursing at UFMS (Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul) and was just days away from completing her degree. Colleagues reported that she had finished her internship and was preparing to graduate this semester. In a statement, the Coxim Campus of UFMS deeply regretted the loss of the student, highlighting that she was one of the most dedicated students in her class. "Letícia will always be remembered for her empathy, her commitment to caring for others, and the joy with which she approached her studies. In this moment of immense sadness, we express our sincere condolences and solidarity to her family, friends, and teachers," the text reads. After the accident, Cleyton was taken to the hospital under police escort and then transferred to the Coxim Civil Police Station, where he was charged with intentional homicide, a crime that requires intent to kill. The bus was seized, and the Scientific Police conducted an investigation at the scene. The report should indicate the vehicle's speed and confirm whether there was a mechanical failure or negligence on the part of the driver. The Coxim City Hall confirmed that Cleyton was not a contractor, but a permanent civil servant of the Municipal Education Department. In an official statement released this Wednesday, the Municipality informed that the Department and the Attorney General's Office are monitoring the case and providing assistance to the victim's family and the employee involved. "The municipal administration expresses its solidarity with the family and friends of young Letícia, offering its support for any need. The City Hall reaffirms its commitment to collaborating with the authorities to clarify the circumstances of what happened," the statement said. The case remains under investigation by the Civil Police, who will determine if Cleyton fell asleep at the wheel, as well as investigate speeding and other factors that may have contributed to the tragedy. He remains in custody. |
