South-Africa. The Ethiopian victims were inside their spaza shop when an armed individual, linked by witnesses and activists to Operation Dudula entered.

The two Ethiopian men did not resist and followed the attacker's orders and lay face-down on the floor and after not finding what the armed man sought he decided to shoot and kill them both.

Operation Dudula's is a group that has called for a National shutdown on May 4, 2026. Their rhetoric against foreign-owned businesses has peaked, leading to lone wolf and organized hits on foreign spaza shops.

Police are investigating if Operation Dudula is being used as a cover by protection rackets. These syndicates demand "tax" from Ethiopian shop owners and if they don't pay, they are executed.

Dudula from origin is a Zulu word meaning to push out or drive back. Originally a grassroots vigilante-style group formed in Soweto in 2021, it officially registered as a political party in 2023.

Zandile Dabula, the group’s president, formally resigned on April 28, 2026, citing internal strife and a desire for civic rather than political leadership.

Her resignation is set to take effect on May 17, 2026. Katlego Malatji, the group's secretary, was reportedly shot and killed in late 2025 while dropping his child at school.

They have participated in hospital and school blockades, demanding that foreign nationals be denied access to public services.

The South African government has officially condemned Operation Dudula as a vigilante-type group.

A Spaza shop derived from the Zulu word isiphazamiso, roughly meaning hidden or camouflaged. These micro-enterprises sell snacks, sweets and pastries.

They emerged during the Apartheid era when Black South Africans were restricted from owning formal businesses.

People began running these shops secretly from their homes, garages, or shipping containers to serve their communities.

There are over 150,000 spaza shops in South Africa, contributing significantly to the economy and accounting for a large portion of local food spending.
