The smaller cop needs to rely on his firearm to in order to avoid physical confrontations that a larger cop could handle with little risk. Tasers often fail, so it is foolhardy for a small cop to try defend a charging lunatic with a taser. An unarmed assailant can become armed in a flash.

If he had avoided death, this lunatic would have continued to harm innocent people all his life, avoiding meaningful confinement with the same "mental illness" defense that the OP used to title this thread. He was under police custody many times already, twice that same day. There is no solution for people like this in a modern, lawful society, since confinement of the insane is no longer legal. All who want non-lethal confrontation, what do you do with the lunatic once he is released the next morning - hire unarmed burly cops to escort him around and wrestle him on a daily basis? These are some pretty major braindead and uneducated takes. Particularly the "just wound him" take. Either way, it's considered use of deadly force, whether you shoot them in the face or in the pinky. Shooting to wound simply doesn't exist, and you could figure that out pretty quickly with the simplest amount of research. The point is a neutralize the threat, and "wounding" is not viable nor realistic. Officer could've very well not had a taser to use. That's an issue with the department to provide that gear. But if that's the officer's only option, he has no choice.
