Coordinated attacks were launched across Mali by the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) - which focused on northern cities, such as Timbuktu - and the al-Qaeda affiliate, Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). The attacks were based around multiple cities, such as the capital Bamako, and the city of Kati, home of a major military base.

Mali's defence minister, Sadio Camara, was killed in Kati when a vehicle-borne explosive detonated outside his residence. The Malian army described the attackers as "terrorist groups" and claims to have repelled many of them.

The northern city of Kidal, a longtime stronghold for Tuareg separatists, was claimed to have been taken over by the FLA. A deal was struck to allow the Russian Africa Corps fighters (successors to the Wagner group) and Malian troops to safely evacuate the city. Russian forces had been helping the Malian junta to reclaim Kidal since 2023.

The attacks come amid ongoing instability under Mali's military junta, led by Gen. Assimi Goïta, who seized power in coups in 2020 and 2021. The regime has relied heavily on Russian mercenaries after expelling French and UN forces, but large parts of the north and centre remain contested by insurgents and separatists.
