Precisely! He should have either a)minded his own business or b)taken a gun. I wonder if this will be considered some sort of self defense... which quickly turned into overkill.

Guns are strictly illegal in Morocco. There's a high penalty for carrying. Although I'm pro-gun for civilized people, it may be one of the reasons that Morocco is surprisingly safe when it comes to violent crimes, despite some spectacular examples to the contrary. We are at around 1.5-2 homicides per 100k capita, which is comparable to some Euro countries. About self-defense, it may not apply in this case. The response to the threat should be proportionate, ie the killers should have stopped when the victim was disarmed and neutralized. Overkill as you mention is legally treated like voluntary homicide/murder. So they're probably looking at 20 years to life in prison. The death penalty (which can be pronounced but never applied, so it's purely symbolic and de facto equivalent to life in prison) is demanded by the populace but I doubt it will be held. |

It's unclear if he got disarmed or the killer used his own weapon. The latter was selling fish on a street stand when he was attacked, so maybe he used one of his tools.
