I traveled to Bogotá, Colombia, several times for business, about 7 years ago. Highways are pretty wide there, and the city is super packed with people. It’s a fun city, but chaotic and def not very safe. I could never drive there, but company would pay for a private driver. Anyway the very first time I was driven (and every time after that) you could always see it. From one end of the avenue a bunch of people running, with babies, carriages, whatever. Running from one end of the highway to the other, as the cars are coming. Now, this is a full on transited avenue with cars speeding through. I was so shocked by it. What I was told is that the people do a last minute final mad dash, so they can get into the bus without having to pay. I’m assuming it’s poor folk. Not really sure how that works. I was convinced I’d see someone dying. Never did, and I went many times. But I’m told it often happens that people get killed. I would ask some of the locals in the office “how do these people get the nerve to do that like nobody’s business?” One of them said “ well… don’t you see, even as babies they are being sped from end to the other. By the time they grow up, they’re used to it  “.In Rio de Janeiro you would see kids selling shit in between lanes, as the cars sped past them at insane speeds. This video reminds me of all that. |
