Moscow Gunman Shot Dead in Attack on FSB Headquarters

A gunman in central Moscow has shot dead an officer from Russia's main security agency and wounded at least five others, according to the health ministry, in what the Kremlin is calling an "act of terrorism".

The attacker in Thursday's attack outside the Federal Security Service's (FSB) headquarters was "neutralised", the agency said in a statement carried by state news agency TASS.

Step Vaessen, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Moscow, confirmed the attacker had been shot dead in a gunfight on the street with FSB agents.

The FSB - the main successor agency to the Soviet-era KGB - said there was only one attacker, who failed to enter its headquarters.

"It's a shock that an attacker could reach the office here and that he managed to kill an FSB officer," said Vaessen, reporting from the scene.

"It's understood he was carrying a Kalashnikov, the famous machinegun, and there are now a lot of questions as to how he could have got so close to the heart of the Russian security services."

The FSB would not offer further details of the incident, or comment on the attacker's suspected motives, but it may have been planned to coincide with a speech President Vladimir Putin was making to commemorate Russia's Security Services Day, a source close to the FSB told Reuters News Agency.

Putin was himself a KGB agent for 16 years, before leaving the agency to enter politics. He returned to the building five years later, in 1996, as director of the reformed FSB agency.

"So far, we have no confirmation of the identity of this person, or his motivations," said Vaessen. "But it happened just a few hours after President Putin finished his annual press conference. He spoke for more than four hours, and interestingly, he was asked to cite the most distressing moment of his 20 years in government - and he mentioned terrorist attacks, especially the one in 2004 in Beslan, in which hundreds of people, mostly children, were killed.

"That was the most difficult moment in his career, he said, and then just a few hours later, this attack happened at the headquarters of this institution where he worked for 16 years."

Russian investigators opened criminal proceedings into the murder and attempted murder of law enforcement officers after the incident, the Interfax news agency cited the Ministry of Health as saying.

Later on Thursday, an explosion was also heard in the central area, but it was not immediately clear if this was linked to the earlier attack.

Update:
A second Russian security officer has died after a gunman opened fire at the Federal Security Service (FSB) headquarters in Moscow on Thursday.

The FSB officer died of his wounds in hospital, the Investigative Committee (SK) said. The shooting with an assault rifle killed an officer at the scene.

The SK confirmed that a lone gunman, Yevgeny Manyurov, had attacked the HQ's entrance. A sniper shot him dead.

Five others were wounded when Manyurov opened fire, one of them a civilian.

The SK statement confirmed earlier media reports that Manyurov was aged 39 and had lived just outside Moscow. The motive for his attack remains unclear.

Russian media, quoting unnamed police investigators, described him as a loner and gun enthusiast. He lived in Podolsk, about 40km (25 miles) south of Moscow.

At the Kremlin, a couple of kilometres away, President Vladimir Putin was at a gala evening honouring the FSB.

The details about the gunman were reported by Russian government daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta on Friday.

The FSB headquarters - called the Lubyanka - used to house the Soviet KGB. The FSB is Russia's main domestic intelligence service.

On Thursday night police searched Manyurov's flat, which he had shared with his mother, and they detained her for questioning.

Her son had worked as a security guard but lost his job recently and never had any visits from friends, Russian media quote her as saying. Police found five guns at the flat - legally registered and kept in a safe - along with a large quantity of ammunition.

Manyurov once trained as a lawyer and did some legal consulting work, reports say.

He was single and practised shooting regularly at a gun club, which was a passion for him, his mother is quoted as saying.

She also said she had heard him speaking English on the phone with some "Arabs", who had started calling him since he had lost his security job.

When he opened fire, Manyurov "was shouting slogans typical of Islamic State", the daily Kommersant reports. It says the information came from a security source, who quoted witnesses questioned by police.

Fatikh Manyurov, the gunman's father, gave more details to Russia's Telegram 112 news channel. His son had told him he was working as a security guard at a foreign embassy, he said. That has not been confirmed, however.

His son was "morose" and dreamt of becoming a "master of sport" in shooting, said Fatikh, who is separated from Yevgeny's mother. He said he had rarely spoken to his son.

The Russian daily Komsomolskaya Pravda interviewed a shooting instructor at the Dosaaf club where Yevgeny Manyurov practised and took part in at least two shooting competitions.

The instructor, Oleg Solovich, said Yevgeny Manyurov "was a poor shot". "To be a good shot you need to train for a few years. He practised at our club for about three months," he said.

"He socialised normally, but came to training sessions wearing a long black raincoat - a Parka - with a hood. We advised him to take off his coat during shooting sessions, but he said he felt comfortable in it," he said.

The shooting came just hours after President Putin's marathon annual press conference, which went on for more than four hours.

At the gala evening, in the Kremlin Palace, Mr Putin stressed the importance of "intensive" FSB work to fight terrorism.

Re: Moscow Gunman Shot Dead in Attack on FSB Headquarters

At least one person has been killed and five wounded in a shooting at the headquarters of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) in central Moscow, Russian media say.

A gunman who opened fire with an automatic weapon at the entrance of the building was killed by an armed officer, Interfax news agency reports.

Security forces cordoned off the area and moved bystanders into buildings.

(....)

Details of the incident, which began shortly after 18:00 (15:00 GMT), remain unclear.

The FSB denied earlier reports suggesting there were three gunmen in the attack on its headquarters. The unconfirmed reports said two had been killed in the lobby while the third ran off to a nearby building where he was later killed in a shootout with police.

Among the injured were two seriously hurt officers, the Health Ministry told Russian media. Shortly afterwards, the intelligence agency itself confirmed the death of one FSB officer - though it is not clear if he is one of the two reported injured in the earlier report.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50858949

Got some massively watermarked footage from a dozen angles, some of those Russians seem not to give a fck about heavily armed military taking cover behind concrete bloks and keep laughing and filming trough the glass from a local Bar

Some footage is digitally zoomed, so a tad grainy.

But you see the shooter getting killed, and also one video of the bystanders/traffic-officers* who run for cover but wont make it.

The added photo is leaked, seems to be the attacker.

Tjetsjen maybe?

They have a long history of attacks from Tsjetsjens .. In fact my ex girl was hours before an entire school got murdered visiting that same school..
Talk about timing , she got away just hours before the attack happened

Anyway, i wander away of the topic lol

(* an traffic officer got shot by the attacker at first and seemed to have died. The KGB said only one of their people got killed, but keep in mind that all kind of regular cops , traffic cops, etc .. Around this building its all KGB/FSB)

@Modds, i don't have the technical means to cut of the last part of the video's showing "spam"/source/watermark.

All video's comming from a Russian language Telegram channel.

If someone is interested i can translate the video descriptions tomorrow (life in GMT+1 zone)

If some more worthfull footage shows up i will add this

Supposed shooter
According to REN TV, an entrepreneur from Podolsk attacked the FSB building.

39-year-old E**** M**** was engaged in business, law, and also advising on business and management.

The man shot well, participated in relevant competitions and was engaged in his own education as an adult - for example, he attended courses at the HSE.

And here is how sappers prepared a special robot to remove a backpack from a dead criminal. Special services were afraid of explosives, so they had to use equipment.
Some footage of Bomb-squat that approached the killed attacker.
