Model-turned-actress, Shikha Joshi, 40, was discovered with a sharp knife lodged in her throat in her friend's home in Andheri, a sprawling suburb in northern Mumbai, a bustling city famous for its Hindi film industry. The police have quickly labeled the incident as suicide and even reasoned, continued lack of employment led her to take her own life.

Having arrived merely a month back from Delhi, the capital of India, Ms. Shikha wanted to gain a foothold in the ever growing Hindi film industry, often referred to as Bollywood. Staying at her friend’s house, Shikha’s routine was quite similar to thousands of struggling actors and actresses who throng to the gates of production houses, directors, and casting agencies. Interestingly, Shikha already had a critically acclaimed Bollywood film BA PAss wherein she had starred alongside Shilpa Shukla, another known figure in the film industry.

The incident that unfolded in the evening, as narrated by her roommate, has been recorded by the police, stated senior inspector Ravindranath Pawar.

At 6.30 p.m. on Saturday Joshi locked herself inside the bathroom, taking a knife along. A few minutes later, the roommate knocked on the bathroom door asking Joshi to come out. The roommate asked Joshi why she was taking so long inside. When the door opened, her neck was covered in blood,

The inspector added that the roommate rushed a profusely bleeding, but still responsive Shikha to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, a well-reputed hospital in the vicinity.

Shikha: (feeble voice, as she tries to get up but slips on blood) I don't know.
Bharti: Shikha, say why did you do this?
Bharti: Shikha let it stay on your neck it will stem the flow of blood. (referring to a piece of cloth).
Bharti: Speak up Shikha, police will ask us. Why did you do all this? Whose mistake was it?
Shikha: Everybody's
Bharti: Everybody who?
Bharti: Whose fault is it? Say fast, we will tell their names to the cops.
Shikha: Dr Sharma.
Bharti: Dr Sharma? And?
Shikha: Married men.
Bharti: Married men? Who all?
Shikha: Many.
Bharti: Many? But who all?
Bharti: Shikha, place a handkerchief on the cut. Shikha, Shikha.

(A third person, a woman's voice is heard. Camera angle changes. Bharti asks somebody to continue recording. A man checks Shikha).

Bharti: She says Dr Sharma and many other married men, who exploited her, are responsible for this.

A male voice: Take her to a hospital.

Bharti: How will we take her to a hospital? (A voice in the background: Don't bring the children here)

A male voice: Take her (to a hospital) in a car.

Bharti: You carry her. We are not going to do it.

A woman's voice: How will you carry her in a car, there is so much blood?

Male voice: Lift her. Is an ambulance coming?

(Shikha's moaning can be heard over all the voices. Bharti is heard telling somebody again that Shikha has slashed herself.)
