Life is no movie. She was 30 years old when she died and they had a 1 year old son. That means that she was 28 or so when she left the cartel. She spent her teen years and 20's partying with the Narcos and one day she decided that she was ready to settle down and have a nice respectable family. Away from the crazy lifestyle she spent her early youth in. She found this guy and in her mind they were going to continue living and forget about the past. Except none of that happened.
