Re: Mexican Political Representative and His Family Killed in Plane Crash
That seems odd to me. You know this as factual? In my mind I see an airplane being able to have some glide while I see a helicopter simply drop. I don’t know shit it’s just something I’ve never heard before. I guess I could just look it up for myself but wondered your experience.. |

Re: Mexican Political Representative and His Family Killed in Plane Crash
When an airplane engine quits, the aircraft can glide for a good distance, but the problem is there may not be a good landing area inside that distance range. With a helicopter, if you lose your engine, it can auto-rotate down, which means it descends under full control. And finding a landing spot for a helicopter is a lot easier than for an airplane. Any 50 foot square area will work, from a plowed field to a store parking lot. Auto-rotation training is standard when you learn to fly a helicopter. Typically they just descend at a moderate rate, and just before touch-down, the pilot raises the collective, and the helicopter just touches gently down. Unless you run into power lines you didn't see. Then you're screwed. |

Re: Mexican Political Representative and His Family Killed in Plane Crash
Correct, A Beechcraft E90 King Air impacted a hillside in Salto de Agua, Chiapas, at about 2800 ft and about 8,5 NM Southwest of its destination Palenque International Airport (PQM/MMPQ), Palenque. Going to change title.
The occupants died and the aircraft was destroyed. Among the occupants was a local deputy. There are conflicting reports on the number of fatalities. Most sources indicate six fatlities: the local deputy, his mother, wife, two children and the pilot. Some sources suggest there were eight fatalities. |

Re: Mexican Political Representative and His Family Killed in Plane Crash
Attached is an image showing the flight track of the aircraft (sourced from publicly available ADS-B data) viewed in Google Earth. The plane was descending with the intention of landing at Palenque Airport (ICAO: MMPQ). There are multiple ranges of hills/mountains under the aircraft's track. Shockingly the aircraft nearly crashed into the previous range, climbing after narrowly avoiding a crash, and then beginning to descend again. The pilot clearly did not know where he was. It was a commercial flight, so I would *expect* that the aircraft would be operating IFR (instrument flight rules - i.e. not relying on visibility but navigating using instruments so visibility doesn't matter until you get to the runway). But that track doesn't look like an IFR track to me. If the flight was operating VFR (visual flight rules, not relying on instruments) the aircraft is not allowed to enter cloud or fly over a cloud layer. One reason for that is to prevent you flying into something that is sticking up ... |

Pilot got disoriented and crashed into mountain. Reminds me of the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash.

Re: Mexican Political Representative and His Family Killed in Plane Crash
Yes, I have quite a bit of experience in fixed and rotary. I've flown small fixed wings myself. Had several friends who were rotary pilots and I've also flown R/C fixed and rotary. BINGO Or you are in a Little Bird practicing auto's and hot dogging a bit too much and you deplete rotor energy just a hair too soon (about 50 feet over ground) and pancake the gear flat to the belly causing disk injuries to your right seater and retire the following morning... |

But only if the pilot is trained in how to do it. |

People in first video were speaking an Amerindian dialect/language probably a Mayan dialect called Ch'ol, not Spanish |
