A man and a woman, Nicolás and Irma, both of Tseltal Maya origin, were lynched and burned alive after being accused by residents of practising witchcraft.

A group of residents detained Nicolás and Irma, took them to the town's main covered pavilion, and subjected them to verbal and physical abuse before dousing them with fuel and setting them on fire.

The bodies were then dumped along the side of a road on the outskirts of town.
