First, as others have said, there is a problem with certain men deciding that "if I can't have you, no one can have you." Her ex could have been a narco, or just someone with money. In this third-world culture, there is an incredible amount of envy, even among supposed friends. Let's say you're a guy with a Latina girlfriend, and you buy her a used car. That would make her head and shoulders richer above her other friends, with clothes, even richer, and with plastic surgery, even richer. The culture tends to resent those who (however they do it) end up doing better, and rather than spurring on a desire in other people to also do better, it tends to spur jealousy, envy and resentment. This girl would have been hit upon by her friends and relatives to loan them money and to give them things simply because she had more than they did. That's their mentality. Those in her closest circle would almost feel entitled to it. Finally, if her ex (or whoever did it) had a little bit of money, it would have taken nothing more than a bribe of her "friend" to have the friend talk her into staying around and thus setting up the hit. You can blame it on the poverty, but I'd say it's a mix of poverty, culture, and envy--a little bit of money and your own friends and family will sell you out in a lot of these places. End result: the girl ended badly with an ex, she knew her life was in danger, but didn't run away to start a new life (literally what has to be done in these cases), someone bribed the friend to set up the hit, and you see what happened.

When a bullet passes through your body it creates a shockwave/ripple that violently shakes the tissues the reverberation passes through, at a level of energy waning from that of the velocity of the bullet plus any other factors (like if it wad a hollow point round). This can cause lethality in itself, aside from the puncture of the bullet as your organs are eviscerated from the inside out. It's likely she felt the pain from this before the pain from the actual bullet entering her body.

Take a look at what happens to the gel props shooters use on Youtube. Its quite fascinating.
