Massive Landslide at an Artisanal Mine Kills Dozens
On November 15, 2025, a catastrophic landslide struck an artisanal mining site the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The incident occurred at an informal quarry, extracting copper/cobalt. Heavy rainfall had saturated the unstable excavations, leading to the collapse. Despite a formal ban on access due to landslide risks, hundreds of wildcat (artisanal) miners forced their way in, overwhelming a makeshift bridge over a flooded trench. Panic reportedly ensued after gunfire from military personnel securing the site, causing a stampede that contributed to the bridge's failure and the ensuing landslide.  This buried dozens of miners under debris, with some reports describing screams for help from trapped individuals. The disaster highlights the perils of unregulated artisanal mining in the DRC, which employs an estimated 1.5–2 million people directly and supports over 10 million indirectly. Such sites often lack safety measures, and incidents like this are exacerbated by climate-driven heavy rains and weak enforcement of regulations. Rescue operations, led by local authorities and the DRC's artisanal mining agency (SAEMAPE), faced challenges including disputes with legal mining operators (e.g., Chinese firms) over access. No official final count has been issued yet but reports tell 70+ deaths. |
