Re: MAN SUCKED INTO PIPE
The water velocity caused the vacuum that sucked the guy in. It is the Venturi effect, similar physics to how an airplane measures airspeed with a pitot tube. If the flow in the water/sewer pipe was stopped, there would have been zero vacuum. The only way to stop the flow would have been an expensive bypass pump and pipeline setup from an upstream manhole. In some pipe systems, there are no practical ways to stop the flow. A safer way to open up that pipe without bypass pumping would have been to: 1) tap an eyelet in the pipe prior to sawcutting then secure it with a little tension using a service crane. 2) sawcut most of the opening, then use a backhoe tooth to deliver the finishing blow. 3) the sawcut pipe crown would be pulled into the trench and not fall into the flow. Doing that would have been safer for the workers and prevented the iron pipe section from destroying downstream pipes and equipment. |

Andy Dufresne crawled through a river of shit smelling foulness I can’t even imagine…or maybe I don’t want to.

Re: MAN SUCKED INTO PIPE
The force of the water velocity killed the man when the stream graved him. It is hard for me to understand how this was done without the supervision of a COMPETENT engineer. A competent engineer would have saved this man's life by properly find alternatives in reducing water flow, and it's velocity. JOSEPH LEVY was able to introduce several theories regarding the harness of water velocity to produce Kinetic energy. There is a wealth of information available about the unpredictable forces of water. Sadly, few have taken the time to study in a structure setting. |
