Malaysia, Bintulu: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) wants the police to immediately combat secret society gang activities following the fatal shooting of a businessman last Friday.
Its president said discussion had been held with the district police chief on the community's concern following the incident and police had assured that the case would be investigated from all angles.
"The Bintulu community wants a peaceful place of residence, so I urge those involved to withdraw themselves from secret society activities and be law-abiding citizens," he said.
Tiong, who is also the MP for Bintulu, said besides police, the local authorities such as the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) should also be on the look-out for and close down outlets with illegal gambling machines and illegal entertainment joints.
He said the BDA often received complaints from the public on shop owners illegally renovating their premises or occupying the five-foot ways.
"The five-foot ways do not belong to the shop owners and occupying this space could hinder rescue operations in emergency cases like fire outbreaks.
Yesterday, Bintulu district police chief said a special team had been formed to investigate the case of a man shot by an unknown person in a white Myvi car, while having a drink at the five-foot way with his friends at 9.40pm, last Friday.
He said the shooting took place in front of an entertainment outlet close to Parkcity and the 32-year-old victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the Bintulu Medical Centre.
He declined to reveal the identity of the victim so as not disturb the investigation, said a 31-year-old man, the owner of the entertainment joint, was injured in the shooting incident and reportedly in stable condition while receiving treatment.
He said the motive of the killing was believed to be business rivalry and the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
