After listening to some podcasts about this guy I've found that according to his publicist, he was a stuntman who needed funds and attention to build his beloved rocket so jumped on the flat earth thing.

Apparently if successful he would have come back down and told everyone the earth isn't flat. I believe his plan was to launch the rocket up to a certain height then deploy a balloon to carry him even higher.

Fuck knows how he expected to breathe up there so even if he were able to achieve his goal he would likely have died.
